Low key

图片
This is my first time setting up equipments for low key portraits. Me and my friends did this butterfly setup after watching a video from YouTube. Low key lighting is a style of lighting that has an emphasis on shadows.

Studying and mimicking Andrea Gulickx’s Anemone flower

图片
The first image is shot by me mimicking Andrea Gulickx’s anemone flower (second picture). The photo has a shallow depth of field, which is the area in focus. If you look closely, you’ll find that only the stamens are in focus. The photo also has a very plain and smeared background.    This photo was shot in a botanical garden. The geographical feature of the flower allowed to take a closer look and shot.

This photo was shot in Downtown, Vancouver. At first, I wanna exaggerate the shade on the ground, but then I realized that the overall tone of the picture is really dark. I needed a subject that can light up the whole picture and be the main focus. Then i came across these benches with orange coloured umbrellas. Orange and blue are contrasting colours which means they are the direct opposite of each other on the colour spectrum. Contrasting colours can results in high exaggeration, and that's exactly what I need. There is the shot and the process.

Imogen Cunningham's abstract flower

图片
The first photo was shot by Imogen Cunningham who was an American photographer known for her nature photography. When small things like flower beomes black and white, people will focus on their shape and lighting rather than their colour. The second photo was shot by me that mimics the black and white style Mrs.Cunningham likes to use. However, I didn't crop the photo into only one or two flowers, I leave it with the leaves and the background because the lighting on the leaves demonstrates the characteristics of black and white photos.

The two photos, one being one of William Eggleston’s masterpieces, and the other being me juxtaposing the second photo. This photo is famous due to the interesting angle the photo was shot. Putting the camera on the ground provides a “leading line” to the main subject which is the car. Comparing the two photos also shows how society had improved over time and how quickly technology changed over years.

These two photos were inspired by William Eggleston. Almost all of his colored photos shows a dramatic difference in colors. In the first photo, the orange car was highlighted by the blue-grey background that the sky and other cars had provided. The second photo shows the complementary color red and green to bring contrast from the shadows and the bricks.
